In addition to our shared affinity for local restaurants, we Doctors of Za are also staunch proponents of the local music scene. But when Gilead Media mailed me a press pack and CD of Milwaukee hardcore outfit Get Rad yesterday, I didn’t know quite why. I mean, I was glad to get the album 1. For free, 2. A day before tonight’s CD release show at Bay View Brew Haus… but the glut of my freelance work falls into the realms of local dining reviews, concert recaps, and professional baseball or arena football profiles. And sometimes I’ll slap on a moniker to write borderline offensive things pertaining to pizza. So why me?

But when I heard Get Rad’s masterpiece “Drug of Choice”, I understood. Spanning just over a minute, it wasted no time striking a chord deep within me. It’s nothing short of scripture. I’d like to share it with you.

Master-Pizza Theater

Think about some of the most significant movies to ever come out of Hollywood and it becomes clear that one common thread ties them all together: The indisputable cinematic importance of pizza. Sure, everyone can pinpoint the classics like the unforgettable French bread pizza scene in Gone with the Wind, Brando’s timeless deep-dish pizza monologue at the end of On The Waterfront, and that part in Bad Lieutenant where Harvey Keitel whacks off on some chick’s car and then gets a slice. But pizza has permeated so many levels of the film industry that DoZ is setting out to finally get pizza all the credit it deserves by examining some of the most pivotal pizza scenes ever created.

Pizza Power, TMNT

Sometimes when I’m sitting around, once again bored in the lonely existence that my life’s decisions have brought about, I simply type the word “pizza” into a YouTube search and see what comes up. Now and again — amid the Coldplay fan covers, “epic fails” and clips of that “Snooki” girl getting laid out by some assclown that comprise about 94 percent of YouTube videos — I’ll stumble on to something kind of pizza-related that I feel is worth writing about. It’s one of my more attractive characteristics, I assure you.

In the past, I’ve deconstructed a Jonas Brothers video, and posted a list of decent pizza clips during times when the site’s activity was down … or when I didn’t foresee eating at a new pizza place in the near future. Today is no different. I happened upon this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tribute clip that uses the song “Pizza Power” as background music.

7 Sweet Pizza Clips

Posted by T. Mario in Pizza Media

Pizza transcends the realm of food. More than any other edible, it’s malleable and accessible to a number of genres: Humor, adventure and song, to name just a few. Think about it, have you ever heard a song about a lollipop or watched a Saturday Night Live skit based around Sloppy Joe’s?

Oh. You have? Well, fuck it, pizza is still better. As I prepare my gunt for a Fox Cities pizza-eating marathon this Thanksgiving weekend, I’m taking a temporary step back from reviews this week to, instead, post some of the kind-of funny, moderately entertaining and/or semi-sing-along-able pizza-related videos on the Web to tide you over during this short week.

You can’t help but respect the Jonas Brothers. Not many can win the acclaim of the planet, make millions of dollars, and have all the celebrity trim they could handle — and turn it down in the name of God? — all without ever knowing how to actually play music. “Pizza Girl”, 141 seconds of audio gout, perfectly illustrates this point. Its lackluster musicianship and recycled video concept nearly ruin the good name of pizza.

Let’s watch together and critique, shall we?

From what I know of the guy, I like Brian Butch. He’s my age, hails from my hometown, was a Badger, and when St. Pizza, Marinara and I met him at a Brewer game a few years back, he wasn’t remotely a dick to us even though we were drunk and probably annoying as shit.

Butch has yet to realize NBA glory since leaving Madison, but has spent time playing in the NBA’s D-League, as well as China, Germany and, currently, Greece. Even cooler, Butch is now a pitchman for Pep’s Pizza, a Wisconsin-based frozen pizza company.

The following ad has everything I love in a commercial: A local celebrity, unnecessarily switching camera angles which the actor can’t quite catch up with, NO budget, pizza, and that thing where someone shoots a basketball without looking and swishes it.

I’ve watched the commercial like 12 times, and I’ve come to the conclusion that Butch really made the shot.
